The new menu at Mykonos Doha in a nutshell
Mykonos, the longstanding Greek restaurant located poolside at the old Intercontinental Hotel, is an oldie but a goodie on the Doha dining scene. It was one of the first places that Mr Sunshine took me for a date when I first visited him in Qatar in an attempt to woo me into moving out here, and let’s just say that there was something about the hearty island-inspired food and the balmy breeze on the pretty terrace…it kind of worked!
Now, to keep things fresh, the restaurant has updated its menu with some traditional Greek favourites and there’s plenty to keep us returning for more.
Why is it worth it?
No matter how well-loved a restaurant is, things can get a little stale over time. Adventurous customers will scour the menu for something other than the predictable Greek salads and Moussakas. Returning customers are always going to be on the look-out for something new to try. Mykonos has risen to the challenge by adding several new traditional and authentic Greek dishes to their already impressive menu.
Menu aside, if you haven’t visited the restaurant yet, you must. The indoor-outdoor vibe, the views over the Intercontinental’s pools and beach beyond, the rustic decor and friendly staff make it a charming place to wile away an evening now that the weather is much nicer outside.
What were the best dishes?
The addition of mussels to the menu in the form of a Saganaki (pan-fried dish) was an exciting one for me, as I love my seafood, and these didn’t disappoint; they were plentiful, flavourful and delicious.
The Beef Giouvetsi is something that all of those, like me, who aren’t well-acquainted with Greek food should try. It was described to me as the Greek version of an Indian Biryani, and with tender morsels of melt in the mouth beef, combined with Greek Orzo (short-cut pasta) which is full of flavour and aroma, it is like a hug in a bowl.
Finally, the Lobster Linguine “Astakomakaronada” is worth ordering, if you can pronounce it. Served up in a steaming hot pan, which is placed smack bang in the middle of the table, it feels just like eating home-cooked food at a Greek mama’s home with all of the family. There will be no arguments with this one, as there’s plenty to go around.
Sadly, we didn’t get a chance to sample dessert this time! Please let me know what you would recommend next time you go!
